Chapter Ten
EMILY
Last night, Emily had fallen asleep nestled in Makâs arms by the lake. Having him curled around her, holding her as he did, made her feel safe and wanted, truly wanted. She would have slept with him, but Mak had carried her back to the guestroom. Sheâd held onto hope that heâd climb into bed with her up until the last minute when heâd tucked her in and left. That had been a disappointment, but perhaps it was a sign. She hadnât been able to disclose her dark truth, and on some level, he knew he couldnât be with her until she learned to be honest with him.
She didnât want this time with Mak to end, but she couldnât go on deceiving him. Vonnich knew who and what heâd contracted for. The man already had children, from what BuâTay had said, and wasnât interested in more, which is why heâd chosen her. And she was fine with that. She could love another manâs children as much as her own. But she wouldnât steal a manâs dreams from him.
Mak wanted childrenâyounglings as he called themâand heâd be a great father, but not with her. She had to move on, make a life with Vonnich so Mak could find the woman whoâd make him happy, whoâd love this farm alongside him, a woman who could give him children.
âEmily, can you get breakfast ready?â Mak called from the kitchen. âI need to check the fields after the storm we had in the middle of the night. âIâll return soon. Start without me if youâre hungry and donât burn your tongue.â
The front door slammed. Mak had headed out.
Emily quickly showered and dressed, wearing a shirt sheâd borrowed from Mak. She knotted the shirt at her waist, taking a moment to breathe in his scent. The musk of male, of Mak in particular. . . She loved that smell.
As she packed her satchel with all of her belongings, she decided sheâd tell him this morning and then make a clean break of their relationship to avoid the awkwardness of him saying he couldnât give up the idea of having kids. She could return to town at that point, even if she had to walk. Staying here any longer, fantasizing and living a dream that wasnât meant to last, wasnât fair to either of them, especially Mak.
Emily spent the next half-hour sweeping, dusting, and picking up Makâs clothes from wherever they landed around the house. The man really was a slob, but he was her slob. Her adorable, sweet slob. Damn, she had to stop thinking of him as hers.
As she set the breakfast table with all the foods Mak placed on the table each morningâshe had yet to learn their namesâshe felt warm lips at the back of her neck. She closed her eyes, trying to memorize the moment, the feel of his arms going around her waist and drawing her against his front.
âWhatâs wrong?â he asked, turning her to him. His brows furrowed. Heâd sensed her agitation before heâd even seen her face.
